Year 8, Visit to the Museum of Ethnography

Year 8, Visit to the Museum of Ethnography

Back in early March, Year 8 recieved a guided tour of an exhibition based on imperialism, colonialism with focus on Africa in 1800 but also an input of Australian colonisation. The aim of the visit was to get more knowledge about the subject and become more aware of the structures, norms, and stereotypes that are produced and reproduced in our society (and that they are a part of reproducing these structures).

Teater X, Stockholm

This week IES Älvsjö Swedish department has launched our Skapande skola (Creative school) project. The theme we chose: “What’s going on in social media?” is highly relevant from the students’ perspective - and from ours as an educational institution. We have established a very rewarding collaboration with Teater X. This theatre company has given us a wonderful introduction into “playback”, a type of improvisational theatre in which the actors play back stories that the audience - our students - share during the performance. To experience and to be part of a play in the making is something quite extraordinary. Next, all classes will have their own workshops together with both actors and a musician. After a final workshop produced by the students themselves, we will continue working with the theme during Swedish lessons. We are grateful for the support from Kulturrådet (the Arts Council) that enabled us to incorporate the energy and inspiration provided by the Teater X.

6C at "Day for the Environment"

Class 6C from IES Älvsjö attended Svenska Dagbladet's "Day for the Environment". The event was held on Monday, November 25th at Oscar's Theater in downtown Stockholm. The students participated in seminars about exciting new energy sources, recycling at home, as well as the impact of young environmental activists. There was also a panel with members from "Fridays for Future" and even an energy break with Morten from Ninja Warriors. All attendees received Swedish ecological apples and a copy of SvD Junior newspaper. 6C had this opportunity as part of their school day, with their Literacy class. They had been reading about, writing and discussing "Fridays for Future", the Greta effect and the environment this term. It was an inspiring afternoon for everyone! Thank you, Svenska Dagbladet for hosting this event!

Class 6C were excited for Svenska Dagbladet's "Day for the Environment".

Young environmental activists from "Fridays for Future" discussed the school strike and more.

Student Work

Year 5 3D plant box

Year 5 3D plant box

Students built their own 3D plant box using craft techniques (masking, carving, cut and paste) from a paperboard. They started with an initial idea, then used color pencils to add details and style. They developed their skills with different paper craft techniques, and learned how to construct a box from a paperboard. The final products looked amazing!
